Although BVI borders are currently closed, the postponement flag is being lowered for the 2020 BVI Spring Regatta.  The regatta, now scheduled for October 23-25, 2020, was postponed on Friday March 13th as the Covid-19 lockdowns began, just days from the start of the 49th edition of the event.  But now, multiple classes, three days of great racing, and a regatta village for post-race parties means the stage is set for the 2020 BVI Spring Regatta.

“The event will be held in the hopes that the borders are open for visitors and boats to join. If we are still closed we have a number of great sailboats and sailors here in the territory,” said Judy Petz, director of the BVI Spring Spring Regatta.

Registration starts Thursday October 22 at Nanny Cay Resort and Marina, the hosting sponsor of the Spring Regatta for over 15 years.

“The Sailing Instructions are prepared for some challenging racing,” commented Robert Phillips chairman of the race committee.  “The three-day regatta will include racing the Round Tortola Race for the Nanny Cay Cup; the 2nd Mount Gay Race Day and courses set using BVI islands as extraordinary nautical marks for long distance or windward/leewards.  The race committee can design multiple races each day creating good courses to fit the day’s weather conditions.”

The event is seeing more one design boats and has added a new Sports Multihull class for the growing BVI fleet of Corsairs. These sleek trimarans are fun and fast, and the increasing fleet is ready for some great competition.

“The thing I like best is fierce competition” said 2019 Sports Multihull winner, Mark Sanders on Island Hop. “I really like that the class has taken off in this way, with potentially more boats joining the ranks.”

If you want to experience the full excitement and culture of sailing and don’t have your own boat here, you can charter a racing equipped bareboat from The Moorings or Sunsail.  There are many classes to choose from and this year and organisers have added a “Fun” class for cruisers.

The daily excitement will continue at the legendary Regatta Village located at the Nanny Cay Beach Bar, with plenty of food, drinks and great music.

Come join the 2020 BVI Spring Regatta, October 22nd -25th, on the water or at the party.
