In the largest-ever ARC Europe rally, 28 yachts from 12 different countries crossed the start line off Tortola today at 1200 (local) just outside the entrance and to the south of where they have enjoyed the marina and facilities at Nanny Cay.. This is the largest ever fleet to take part in World Cruising Club’s ARC Europe rally as many of the yachts are on their homeward back to Europe leg following participating in the World ARC and others having a winter season in the Caribbean.

The predicted ESE to easterly winds 18/23 knots blew once away from the protection of the islands. Wind gusts close to 30 knots are possible, particularly near showers.

In blustery east south easterly conditions, the fleet started their 840nm passage to Bermuda as they crossed the start line between the Horizon Yacht Charters committee boat and a large orange Nanny Cay inflatable buoy close to the shore to the north. Crossing the east to west, the course led the fleet to the west of Tortola, leaving Little Thatch and Great Thatch Islands and Jost Van Dyke to starboard ensuring plenty of sea room.

Spectator and press boats bid them a safe farewell for the first leg of ARC Europe to Bermuda. Next the Azores and then on to the finish in Lagos, Portugal.

Several of the ARC Europe participants are homeward bound after either time in the Caribbean following the ARC or a 15 month voyage around the world with World ARC. Several other yachts are entering one of World Cruising Club’s event for the first time and this will be the start of their own cruising circle to Europe.
