Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health and in particular Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer is the second largest killer cancer of males after lung cancer, despite having a 90% success rate of being treated successfully when diagnosed.

Last year’s Movember activities in the BVI raised nearly $20,000 for men’s health, and this year’s goal is to raise $1 for every BVI resident – a number which is estimated to be 23,552 according to the most recent census data.

This year’s corporate sponsors are aLookingGlass, Anegada Beach Club, Broadsword Communications, The Governor’s Office, Harneys, KPMG, Nanny Cay, TMF and Walkers.

Movember kicks off today with registration at Village Cay from 4.30pm to 6.30pm and the Tamarind Club from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Virgin Gorda residents can register at CocoMaya Restaurant from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on November 2. Participants must present themselves clean-shaven, pay an entry fee, and then raise sponsorship money; failure to complete the month (which is generally precipitated by partners) results in an additional forfeit and disqualification applies.

There will be fundraising events throughout the month and the climax of the month-long moustache growing mayhem is a judging and grand prize ceremony at a pirate-themed Movember Party taking place on Friday, November 30 here at Nanny Cay from 6pm.

The following categories will be judged:

KPMG Best Pirate

Nanny Cay Sexiest Mo

Broadsword Communications Best Mo Crew

TMF Slow Mo (for the least amount of growth in one month)

Harneys Most Booty (for the MoBro who raised the most money)

Governor’s Man of Movember

Walkers Miss Movember
