Before the two days of Christmas excess had even been digested, a stream of trucks could be seen heading between Nanny Cay and Port Purcell. They were ferrying containers and oddly-shaped plastic-wrapped trailers, and prompted many questions throughout the two days of transfer. It was the arrival of the RC44 fleet for the inaugural Virgin Gorda Cup which will kick off the 2014 RC44 Championship Tour. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Virgin Gorda will be hosting the regatta at the end of February and Nanny Cay will be the staging point for storage, set up and delivery.

After the regatta here, the fleet will then travel back across the Atlantic to Europe where they will compete at three European events in Cascais, Portugal; Marstrand, Sweden; and for the first time Sotogrande, Spain before crossing the 4000nm to Muscat, Oman for the final event of the season.

The one-design RC44 was the brainchild of America’s Cup legend Russell Coutts and this Championship is in its eighth year. Coutts said: “I’m looking forward to getting back on the Tour next year. We have some great venues lined up and the competition within the fleet is phenomenal, the Class is growing stronger every year.”
