Freeman Rogers, Man Of Movember 2011BVI Movember Charitable Trust – a charity Nanny Cay is proud to support – recently announced its contributions towards the research, treatment and awareness of prostate cancer. The charity, whose patron is His Excellency the Governor Boyd McCleary, donated $10,000 to the Medical Research Council (MRC) in the United Kingdom, with the funds marked specifically for prostate cancer research.
In addition to the $10,000 donation to the MRC, the Trust distributed funds to a BVI resident suffering from prostate cancer who must travel to the USVI every day for his treatment. “We want BVI residents to know our goal is to help those suffering from prostate or testicular cancers. The whole point of all the Movember events is to raise awareness and to fund research to prevent these cancers and also to let those with cancer know that we can offer financial assistance,” said BVI Movember co-founder Scott Hart.
The decision to donate to the MRC was sparked by an April 2012 BBC article which described the Council’scutting-edge breakthroughs in prostate cancer research. “I am delighted to see that BVI Movember has supported the important work being carried out by the MRC and very much hope that the research will lead to more effective therapies being developed for this disease, which is so prevalent in the male population,” said the Governor.
Supplementary funding has gone to BVI Movember’s awareness-raising campaign. The Trust printed posters which explain cancer risks, healthy practices and medical check-up recommendations. The posters, endorsed by the BVI Cancer Society and The Governor’s Office, will be hung in clinics, doctors’ offices and public restrooms. In keeping with the spirit of BVI Movember, the organization is planning a poster-hanging pub crawl on September 29 which will raise awareness while installing the posters in restrooms across the island. “We hope that men in the BVI will read this information and make an appointment with their physicians for regular screening,” fellow BVI Movember co-founder Adam McDonnell said.
BVI Movember Charitable Trust is an organization that supports the research, treatment and awareness of prostate and testicular cancers. Each year, the Trust organizes BVI Movember—a month-long fundraiser held throughout the period normally known as November — in which men in the Territory gain sponsors to grow moustaches for an end-of-the-month moustache competition held at Nanny Cay.
Last year, the competition’s judging panel comprised His Excellency the Governor, Sir Richard Branson, Tamara Archibald-Gill, Miles Sutherland Pilch and Omonike Robinson-Pickering.
