Nanny Cay Challenge Monohull Record Falls To SPOOKIE
Triple Jack takes overall; SPOOKIE breaks Monohill Round Tortola Record;
The BVI Sailing Festival Round Tortola Race for the Nanny Cay Cup and Nanny Cay Challenge started promptly at 09:30 on Tuesday morning in seas a little rougher than normal due to last week’s high winds, and an easterly breeze of 18+ knots.
The BVI-based trimaran Triple Jack, owned by Richard Wooldridge and Steve Davis, charged off the start to an early lead in the CSA Multihull class. She made her way around the island in 3 hours and 19 minutes – almost 46 minutes slower than her record-breaking time last year – but her corrected time of 3:46:38, gave her first place overall in the 2016 Nanny Cay Cup.

The Round Tortola Race Race for the Nanny Cay Cup kicks off the 2016 BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival tomorrow and life couldn’t be more perfect for the crews of 54 boats competing – the forecast is for breeze in the upper teens.
The Nanny Cay Cup not only sets the scene for a week of great racing with spectacular views of Tortola throughout the 31-nautical mile race, additionally, the teams can also race for the Nanny Cay Challenge – a perpetual challenge for the fastest mono and catamaran record around the island.

The 2016 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival is gearing up to be a “Year Not to Be Missed”, and the kick off will be the Round Tortola Race on March 29th. Over 40 boats have already entered for this year’s race.

On Thursday April 30, trimaran Triple Jack and crew managed to take 6 minutes and 38 seconds off their existing Round Tortola record, rounding the island in 2 hours, 33 minutes and 40 seconds. It is Triple Jack’s third Round Tortola Record.
Despite high hopes for optimal conditions with 15-20 knot winds from the SSE, winds were lighter than expected. Indeed, the winds softened for the important final leg from Soper’s Hole back to Nanny Cay after some unexpectedly big winds on the north side of Tortola.

Mike Hirst and Mark Cochran established the benchmark Round Tortola Record for a Stand Up Paddleboard in the Nanny Cay Challenge with a surprisingly fast time of 7 hours and 9 minutes.
Hirst and Cochrane left Nanny Cay at 5:04am and landed back at 12:13pm. The pair had been waiting for a calm weather window for some time and today, with very light southerly winds forecast, was the day.

In today’s Round Tortola Race for the Nanny Cay Cup, Peter Corr’s Alia 82, Aiyana smashed the monohull record by nearly half an hour. Setting a new record of 3 hours, 29 minutes and 44 seconds for the 37-mile run around Tortola.
Aiyana is the largest yacht competing at the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival and the crew let out a big ‘cheer’ dockside as the news came through they had broken the course monohull record.

Trimaran Triple Jack snatched back her Round Tortola Record on Thursday October 25, flying around the island in 2 hours, 40 minutes and 18 seconds, taking 10 minutes off Formula 40 Soma’s record time set in April 2010 (2 hours, 50 minutes and 15 seconds). The vintage 34-year old Kelsall One-Off shattered her benchmark time of 3 hours and 33 minutes set in the 2009 Round Tortola Race.

Soma heads off to Cooper Island on first beat – click to enlargeSoma, a St John-based Formula 40 catamaran and frequent BVI visitor, smashed the Round Tortola Record yesterday in the first attempt on the Nanny Cay Challenge announced in February. Soma circumnavigated Tortola and outer islands in 2 hours, 50 minutes and 15 seconds smashing Triple Jack’s record of 3 hours, 33 minutes and 27 seconds set in the PegLegs Round Tortola Race November last year.
