A multinational fleet has sailed from the Caribbean and USA to Bermuda, ready to sail across the Atlantic west to east with ARC Europe. 77 sailors on 19 yachts flying the flags of 12 countries will be sailing to Bermuda, then cruising the Azores archipelago before heading for Lagos in Portugal.
The main fleet started from Nanny Cay on May 5th. The second fleet started from Hampton, Virginia on May 6th. The two fleets will rendezvous in St. George’s Bermuda for some social time and preparations for the 1800nm mile Atlantic passage to Horta on Faial in the Azores.

With the Committee Vessel in place the yachts buzzed close by to identify themselves and were soon looking for the best position to start. Andrew Bishop counted down to the start of ARC Europe 2010 and with a clear start line Peter Testen, skipper of yacht “Gin’s”, was first to cross the line in his Hallberg Rassy 48. On a port tack he passed shortly in front of Raymond Polle, on “The Cid II”, and John Easteal, on “Fair Encounter”.
John and Mary Driver on “Shazam” did well to make it out from Nanny Cay in time to take the start line after two days spent repairing a crack in one of their bulkheads. Their J-130 came in close past the Committee Vessel powered up and looks like a quick boat, maybe they will make the finish line first?

Nanny Cay, the British Virgin Islands’ flagship resort and marina, recently hosted two cruising rallies: ARC Europe, a transatlantic rally which left for Bermuda and ultimately Portugal, on May 7; and the Atlantic Cup which left for the US and Chesapeake Bay, also via Bermuda, on May 3. Both events visited Nanny Cay for the first time.
Miles Sutherland-Pilch, general manager of Nanny Cay said: “We were very proud to host these two events which between them brought forty yachts to the British Virgin Islands before they left the Caribbean. There are few venues in the Caribbean that can match Nanny Cay’s range of services and facilities to cruising yachtsmen preparing to depart on long crossings.”
