Movember Party and Competition at Nanny Cay
The Jack Daniels End of Movember Party and Moustache Competition will take place this Friday, November 30 at Nanny Cay beach at 7pm. This event marks the culmination of a month of fundraising and moustache growth by men throughout the territory. Last year’s Movember raised over $15,000 for men’s health, and this year’s event promises to raise even more money with over 50 men in the territory securing sponsorship for their facial hair growth over the course of the month.
Moustaches will be judged in the following categories: The Nanny Cay Team Mo Bro, The BVI Newbie Lame Mo, The Portcullis TrustNet Mo Growth, The KPMG Mo Money, The CCT Best Mo Celebrity Look Alike, The Forbes Hare Big Sexy Mo, The Movember International Father & Son Mo, Ms Movember, and The Jack Daniels Man of Movember.

Preparing for the Caribbean 1500 Awards Ceremony on the beachThe 2012 Caribbean 1500 – the 23rd edition of the annual event – is all but wrapped up in Tortola. Rally staff departed the island late last week along with several participants who are headed home for the Thanksgiving holidays.
One boat – the Tayana 37 Miramar – remains at sea after departing one week after the main fleet thanks to a few last-minute repairs. At the last position report at 1600 on Wednesday, November 21, Miramar was still 191.8 nautical miles from Tortola.

In the 43rd annual Peg Legs Round Tortola Race on Saturday (Nov 17), Melges 32 INTAC vanquished trimaran Triple Jack to take overall honours and set a new monohull record in the Nanny Cay Challenge. Completing the circumnavigation in 3 hours, 57 minutes and 36 seconds, INTAC took 17 minutes and 29 seconds off the time set by Jurakan, another Melges 32, in the 2009 race.

Andy Schell of World Cruising catches Altair’s linesThe Caribbean 1500 fleet has been arriving this week and only two boats are left at sea. While Moonshadow and Coulicou were closing in on Tortola this morning, rally participants in Nanny Cay were given an in-depth seminar about cruising the BVI with Henry from Horizon Yachts Charters. The Horizon “Chart Room” here at Nanny Cay is filled with photos and charts of the best anchorages, bars, restaurants and hot spots in the BVI, and Henry let everyone in on his secrets.

The crew of Jurakan, winners of the 2011 PegLegs Round Tortola RaceThe 43rd annual Peg Legs Round Tortola Race organised by the Royal BVI Yacht Club and sponsored by Nanny Cay, will take place on Saturday, November 17th. Two classes – racing and cruising – will compete in the 36-mile race.

The new format for the 3-day Sailing Festival prequel to the BVI Spring Regatta is outlined in the Notice of Race which is now available for download and online registration is now open.
Racing takes place on the spectacular waters of the British Virgin Islands on three sailing playgrounds: the Atlantic Ocean, Sir Francis Drake’s Channel and the Caribbean Sea. Many sailors who return each year will enjoy the new changes for racing the Sailing Festival and the traditional, but always reinvented, BVI Spring Regatta hosted by Nanny Cay on Tortola, where the islands are naturally part of the course.

Trimaran Triple Jack snatched back her Round Tortola Record on Thursday October 25, flying around the island in 2 hours, 40 minutes and 18 seconds, taking 10 minutes off Formula 40 Soma’s record time set in April 2010 (2 hours, 50 minutes and 15 seconds). The vintage 34-year old Kelsall One-Off shattered her benchmark time of 3 hours and 33 minutes set in the 2009 Round Tortola Race.

Photo credit Julie PalmForty-two boats are due to start the 23rd Caribbean 1500 rally on November 4 in Hampton Virginia. Thirty-six boats will be heading for Nanny Cay Marina, and six boats will make up the ARC Bahamas fleet, bound for Bluff House Marina on Green Turtle Cay in the Abaco Bahamas.
All but two of the 35 monohulls and 6 catamarans will be sailing in the Cruising Division, enjoying fun competition using World Cruising Club handicaps. This simple and free-to-use system allows boats of all types to be evenly matched and even takes into account motoring hours, allowing boats to keep moving in light airs or heavy swells.

One of the tasty desserts from last year’s culinary competitionThe BVI Charter Yacht Society’s (CYS) annual industry show has moved to Nanny Cay and will take place from Sunday, November 4th until Friday, November 9th
Sunday is “New Crew Orientation”, and registration kicks off Monday at the CYS registration desk between C and D dock. Captain Mulligan’s will host the CYS AGM and crew social in the evening
Tuesday is the official “Day One” and starts with Broker Registration and then rolls into a New Broker Seminar with yacht viewings of the approximately 90 crewed yachts throughout the day. Opening Night festivities will include a Vendor Village and a “How well do you Know your Mate” game show on the stage and beach.

Village life is going to ge busier!The organisers of the week-long BVI Sailing Regatta & Sailing Festival hosted by Nanny Cay have announced exciting changes to the format of the popular three-day prelude to the BVI Spring Regatta in 2013 – known as the BVI Sailing Festival.
The programme includes a race around the island of Tortola for the Nanny Cay Cup, the following day a race to neighbouring Norman Island for some beach-time fun and games at Pirates Bar in The Bight and then a chance to discover Tortola from a different perspective – on, off and under the water – on the final day of the Festival. The Sailing Festival offers competitors the opportunity to discover the magic of some of the 60+ islands that make up the British Virgin Islands whilst taking part in the Regatta.
Change of Date for 2013
Hosted by Nanny Cay Resort and Marina, the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival has moved the date of the 2013 event to March 25th-31st to allow sailors to compete in several different regattas in what has become a packed Caribbean racing calendar.
